Instructions for Using an Oscillating Positive Expiratory Pressure (OPEP) Device

Your child’s healthcare team has prescribed an OPEP device to help clear mucus from the lungs. The OPEP uses vibration and positive pressure to help thin out and move the mucus. It is important to follow the directions closely when using this device to make it as effective as possible.

OPEP devices that are recommended by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia:

Patient instructions:

1. Sit upright with good posture and place your mouth around the mouthpiece with a tight seal.

2. Breathe in slowly for a normal breath and hold your breath for 2-3 seconds.

3. Keep your cheeks tight and blow out through the OPEP device for as long as you can.

4. Do NOT puff your cheeks out as you blow through the OPEP device.

5. Repeat and blow through the OPEP device for 10 breaths with 2 normal breaths in between.

6. Perform 2-3 huff coughs to clear out the mucus. Repeat steps 1 to 6 for 15 minutes or as prescribed.

7. Please reference the OPEP device manual for proper cleaning and storing.
