Immunoglobulin Therapy: Subcutaneous vs. Intravenous
Important information:
There are many considerations when choosing the right type of therapy.
Both types of immunoglobulin therapy:
-
Provide the antibodies needed to help protect you, and both are equally effective.
-
Require regular follow-ups and lab work.
-
Require and insurance authorization process before starting.
Subcutaneous therapy (SCIG):
-
Is typically given every week.
-
Is administered at home.
-
Uses 1-4 needle sites.
-
Is self-infused with education.
-
Maintains steady levels if antibodies.
-
Has few incidences of serious infusion reaction.
Intravenous therapy (IVIG):
-
Is typically given every 4 weeks.
-
Can be administered either in a facility or at home.
-
Uses one needed site.
-
Is always administered by a nurse.
-
Can be given as a large antibody boost.
-
Has greater opportunity for infusion reaction.
