CHG Treatment Video for a Child 22-66 Pounds
CHG (chlorhexidine gluconate) is a cleaning product that is even more effective than regular soap for cleaning the skin. CHG is available in multiple forms, including prepackaged wipes and liquid or foam solutions. Completing a treatment with CHG wipes or a liquid or foam solution decreases the risk of certain infections. Patients with central lines use the wipes every 24 hours while in the hospital. Patients scheduled for certain types of surgery will do a CHG treatment at home the night before surgery and the morning of surgery.
If you are provided with CHG wipes, follow the instructions you were given and watch the video according to your child's weight for step-by-step instructions on how to perform a CHG treatment on a child. If you are provided with a liquid or foam solution, follow the instructions on the packaging. If your child requires a CHG treatment and you were not provided with any product, you can purchase CHG products (Hibiclens or other generic 4% CHG solution) at your local pharmacy. Contact your care team with any questions.
These instructions are for patients treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
