Administering Medicines Using the Home Pump Eclipse System

These instructions are for caregivers of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) patients who have been prescribed medicine at home using the Home Pump Eclipse® system.

Important information about the Home Pump Eclipse® system:

  • The Home Pump Eclipse is a balloon-shaped container filled with medicine. It has a tube that attaches to your child’s IV. When the balloon is filled with medicine, it creates pressure and pushes the medicine through the tubing.

  • The size of the tubing and the amount of medicine in the balloon determine how long it takes for the balloon to empty.

  • Make sure the Home Pump Eclipse is at room temperature before you connect it to your child’s IV.

  • If the Home Pump Eclipse is stored in the freezer, place it in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours before using it.

  • If the Home Pump Eclipse is in the refrigerator, you will need to remove a dose 7 to 12 hours before giving your child the medicine. Your nurse or pharmacist will tell you how many hours ahead to remove the medicine from the refrigerator.

  • Do not use the Home Pump Eclipse if the device if you notice it is leaking.

  • The Home Pump Eclipse is double-lined and is designed with a small semicircle cut out at the top.

Equipment:

Wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer. Gather these supplies:

  • Home Pump Eclipse

  • Alcohol swabs

  • 2 Saline Flushes

  • Heparin Flush

Set up a work area to lay out supplies. Wipe your surface with antibacterial cleanser before laying supplies down.

Instructions for Connecting the Home Pump Eclipse to the IV catheter:

  1. Remove cap from syringe and be careful not to contaminate the inside of the cap. Remove the air from the saline flush by holding the syringe upright. Tap the side of the syringe so the air bubbles rise to the top. Push the plunger carefully to remove the air bubbles.

  2. Scrub the needleless cap at the end of the IV catheter with an alcohol swab for 15 seconds and allow to dry. Do not fan or blow over the cap.

  3. Connect the syringe to the needleless cap and turn it to the right (clockwise).

  4. Unclamp the catheter and flush it with saline, using push-pause method. Re-clamp the IV catheter.

  5. Remove the syringe (counter-clockwise direction).

  6. Make sure the clamp on the Home Pump Eclipse is closed. Then remove the end cap from the end of the tubing.

  7. Now open the clamp until you see a drop of fluid coming from the end of the tubing. This shows you that the tubing is primed and the medicine is flowing properly.

  8. Close the clamp to stop the fluid from flowing. Scrub the needleless cap with alcohol for 15 seconds and allow to dry. Do not fan or blow over the cap.

  9. Connect the Home Pump Eclipse tubing to the needleless cap by pushing in and turning to the right (clockwise) until secured.

  10. Open the clamp on the Home Pump Eclipse tubing and open the clamp on the IV catheter so that the medicine will start flowing.

Disconnecting the Home Pump Eclipse from the IV catheter:

  1. After the Home Pump Eclipse is empty you will need to disconnect it from the IV catheter.

  2. Close the clamp on the IV catheter and close the clamp on the Home Pump Eclipse tubing.

  3. Disconnect the tubing by turning to the left (counterclockwise direction).

  4. Remove air from a saline and a heparin flush.

  5. Scrub the needleless cap on the end of the IV catheter with an alcohol pad for 15 seconds and allow to dry. Do not fan or blow over the cap.

  6. Connect the saline flush to the catheter.

  7. Unclamp the catheter and flush it with saline, using push-pause method. Re-clamp the IV catheter.

  8. Remove the syringe.

  9. Scrub the needleless cap on the IV catheter with alcohol for 15 seconds and allow to dry. Do not fan or blow over the cap.

  10. Connect the heparin syringe.

  11. Unclamp the catheter and flush the line with heparin, using a push-pause method. Re-clamp the IV catheter.

  12. Remove the syringe.
