Lead Testing

What is lead?

Lead is a metal that can be found in old paint, water, dust, and soil. Swallowing or breathing in lead causes lead poisoning. Children can get lead poisoning from:

  • Swallowing lead dust on their hands and toys

  • Drinking contaminated water

What is the risk of lead poisoning?

Lead can hurt (or damage) the brain. Lead poisoning can lead to:

  • Slow growth and development

  • Hearing and speech loss

  • Behavior problems

  • Decreased ability to pay attention and learn

Who should be tested for lead?

It is important to have routine lead screenings. Most children who have lead poisoning do not look or act sick! In our region, children should have 2 lead tests before they turn 2 years old.

How do we test for lead?

  • Your child will have a blood sample taken from their arm.

  • If it is elevated, your health care provider will talk with you about follow up care.

Contact your CHOP healthcare provider with questions or concerns.
