Upper Extremity Exercise: Wrist and Hand Range of Motion

The following instructions are for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) patients to improve the range of motion in their wrist and hand.

Patient instructions:

Your therapist will tell you how long to hold each exercise, how many times you should repeat each one, and how many times you should perform the exercises each day.

Wrist flexion

With your resting on a surface and palm facing up, bend your wrist up.

Wrist extension

Wrist extension

With your arm resting on surface and palm facing down, bend your wrist up.

Elbow flexion and extension

Elbow flexion and extension

Position your hand on the table with your palm up. Gently bend your elbow as far as possible towards you. Then straighten your arm as far as possible.

Forearm rotation

Forearm rotation

Position your arm in a handshake position. Slowly rotate your palm down until you feel a stretch. Relax. Then rotate your palm up until you feel a stretch.

Towel roll squeeze

Towel roll squeeze

Rest your forearm on a surface while gently squeezing a towel.
