Upper Extremity Exercise: Thumb Opposition

These instructions for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) patients describe how to perform thumb opposition, which is touching the thumb to little finger.

Patient instructions:

Passive movement

  1. Place the affected hand to be exercised on your lap with your palm up.

  2. Grasp your thumb with your opposite hand and move it out and over to your little finger.

  3. Repeat as instructed by your therapist.

Thumb Opposition - Passive movement

Active movement

  1. Touch your thumb and pinkie finger together making an "O" shape.  Open your fingers.

  2. Repeat as instructed by your therapist.
