Pelvic Floor: ILU Abdominal Massage

These instructions for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) caregivers describe how to perform stomach massage to improve stomach pain and digestion for their child.

Patient instructions:

This massage is used for constipation, loose bowels, and stomach pain. It helps the food move through your child's gut. Complete this 1 time each day.

I

ILU Abdominal Massage - I

  • Complete clockwise circles with two fingers about 1-2 inches deep.

  • Start on the left side underneath the ribs.

  • Move down towards the hip bone.

  • This forms the letter "I."

L

ILU Abdominal Massage - L

  • Complete clockwise circles starting on the right side under the ribs.

  • Move across the stomach.

  • Next move down towards the left hip bone.

  • This forms a letter "L."

U

ILU Abdominal Massage - U

  • Complete clockwise circles starting above the right hip.

  • Move up towards the top of the right side of the stomach.

  • Next, go across the stomach to the left side.

  • Finish by going down towards the left hip.

  • This forms the letter "U."

Tips:

  • Do not massage directly over a G-tube or stoma.

  • Use music or a relaxing voice to help soothe your child.

  • You may use lotion or oil.
