Torticollis Exercises: Left Torticollis

Important information:

Learn more about congenital muscular torticollis.

Patient instructions:

Right side bending

  • Hold your child's left shoulder with your right hand.

  • Place your hand on top of the left side of the child's head.

  • Slowly bend your child's right ear towards their right shoulder.

  • Work up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds.

Tummy time positioning

  • Place your child on their stomach on the floor, over a positioning pillow, over your leg, or on your chest.

  • Encourage your child to lift their head up from the surface and look in both directions. They may like looking at toys or a mirror in front of them.

  • The child should always be supervised.

Left rotation

  • Place your left hand gently on the child's chest. Place your right hand on the right side of the child's face near the ear.

  • Slowly turn your child's head to the left.

  • Work up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds.

Carrying – football hold stretch

  • Hold the child facing away from you, in a side-lying position with your right arm between the child's legs.

  • Cradle their left shoulder with your right hand.

  • Place your left hand on the left side of the child's head.

  • Gently bring the child's right ear to their right shoulder.

  • Work up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds.

Carrying – football hold stretch

Shoulder stretch

  • Place child on their back.

  • Place your hand gently on the child's chest and grasp the child's left wrist with your right hand.

  • Slowly lift their arm overhead.

  • Work up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds.

Left lateral lean on leg

  • Place your child straddling your leg facing away from you.

  • Support your child around their hips or waist.

  • p>Slowly tilt the child to the left.

  • Encourage your child to bring their right ear to their right shoulder.

Hands to midline

  • Place the child on their back.

  • Hold a toy a few inches above their chest.

  • Encourage your child to look and reach with both hands for the toy.

Feeding

  • Hold your child in your right arm.

  • Move the bottle to turn the child's head to the left.

  • If breastfeeding: please hold your child to encourage them to look to the left.
