Torticollis Exercises: Right Torticollis

Important information:

Learn more about congenital muscular torticollis.

Patient instructions:

Left side bending

  • Hold your child's right shoulder with your left hand.

  • Place your right hand on top of the child's head.

  • Slowly bend your child's left ear towards their left shoulder.

  • Goal: hold stretch up to 30 seconds.

Tummy time positioning

  • Place your child on their stomach on the floor, over a positioning pillow, over your lap, or on your chest.

  • Encourage them to lift their head up from the surface and look in both directions. Your child may like looking at toys or a mirror in front of them.

  • The child should always be supervised in this position.

Right rotation

  • Place your right hand gently on your child's chest. Place your left hand on the left side of the child's face near the ear.

  • Slowly turn your child's head to the right.

  • Work up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds.

Carrying – football hold stretch

  • Hold your child facing away from you, in a side-lying position with your left arm between their legs.

  • Hold their right shoulder with your left hand.

  • Place your right hand on the right side of the child's head.

  • Gently bring your child's left ear to their left shoulder.

  • Work up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds.

Carrying – football hold stretch

Shoulder stretch

  • Place your hand gently on the child's chest and grasp the child's right wrist with your left hand.

  • Raise their arm overhead.

  • Work up to holding the stretch for 30 seconds.

Right lateral lean on leg

  • Place your child straddling your leg facing away from you.

  • Support your child around their hips or waist.

  • Slowly tilt the child to the right.

  • Encourage your child to bring their left ear to their left shoulder.

Hands to midline

  • Place the child on their back.

  • Hold a toy a few inches above their chest.

  • Encourage your child to look and reach with both hands for the toy.

Feeding

  • Hold your child in your Left arm.

  • Move the bottle to turn the child's head to the right.

  • If breastfeeding: please hold your child to encourage them to look to the right.
