Torticollis Exercises: Sitting Activities for Left Head and Trunk Strengthening

These instructions are for caregivers of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) patients with torticollis to strengthen their neck.

Patient instructions:

Supported sit

  • Seat the child on the caregiver's lap.

  • Place your hands at the child's lower trunk and hip area.

  • Tilt the child toward their right hip to encourage lifting their head and trunk to the left side for strengthening.

Supported sit

Independent sit

  • Place the child on a flat surface.

  • Gently shift the child toward their right hip or place a toy to the right side to encourage child to place their right arm on the floor.

  • When the child tries to recover their balance and return to a midline position, they will attempt to tilt their head and trunk to the left, which will strengthen their left side.
