Upper Extremity Exercises After Labral Repair
The following instructions are for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) patients to do the first two weeks following surgery to repair cartilage in the shoulder.
Patient instructions:
Your therapist will tell you how long to hold each exercise, how many times you should repeat each one, and how many times you should perform the exercises each day.
Circular pendulum

|
Let your arm move in a circle clockwise and then counterclockwise. Do this by rocking your body weight in a circular pattern.
|
Side-to-side pendulum

|
Let your arm swing freely from side to side. Do this by rocking your body weight from side to side.
|
Forward and backward pendulum (flexion and extension)

|
Let your arm hang. Use momentum from your body to swing your arm forward and back. Progress from small to larger swings.
|
For weeks 1-2:
-
Your shoulder should only feel tight, not extremely painful. If your shoulder is in extreme pain with the exercises, decrease the size of your movement.
-
Ice your shoulder for 10-15 minutes after doing the exercises.
-
Put your arm brace back on after completing the exercises.
