Transfers: Assisted Stand Pivot Transfer
Patient instructions:
Step 1: prepare the wheelchair

Remove the footrest closest to the transfer surface.

Place the wheelchair next to and as close as possible to the transfer surface.

Lock the wheelchair brakes.

Remove the child's foot from the other footrest if they need help and swing the footrest out to the side. (Figure 1)

Step 2: come to stand

If necessary, assist the child to scoot forward so that both feet are flat on the ground.

To do this, have the child shift their weight to one side. Reach underneath the hip on the opposite side and assist to slide this side forward. Repeat on the other side until the child has both feet on the ground. (Figure 2)

Place your leg that is closest to the transfer surface on the outside of the child's leg. Place your other leg between the child's legs.

Place your hands underneath the child's buttocks, or at the gait belt, while bending your knees.

Encourage the child to lean forward and push up from the armrests with both hands while you assist them into standing. (Figure 3)

Step 3: move to the transfer surface

Keep your knees bent and steady, support the child's pelvis, while you pivot your feet toward the transfer surface.

Encourage the child to reach back for the transfer surface. Slowly lower the child onto the transfer surface, making sure to position their buttocks far enough back to clear the surface. (Figure 4)
