Silicone Gel Sheets for Scar Care
Important information:
-
Silicone gel sheets are used in scar care to aid healing, soften scars, and reduce skin discoloration.
-
These sheets increase moisture and apply gentle pressure to the area.
-
Silicone gel sheets do not contain medication and are available without a prescription.
-
You can find them in drug stores and the pharmacy aisles of supermarkets.
-
Common brands include Neosporin® Scar Solution, Scar Fx® Silicone Sheeting, Rejuveness® Silicone Sheeting, Oleeva® Scar Shapes, and Curad® Scar Therapy.
-
For best results, use the sheets consistently for the first year after surgery.
Patient instructions:
-
Wait 6–8 weeks after the procedure before starting silicone gel sheets.
-
Clean and dry the skin around the scar before applying the sheet. Avoid using any creams or ointments on the area.
-
Cut the silicone sheet to fit, leaving about ¼ inch overlapping the scar on all sides.
-
Apply the self-adhesive sheet directly to the scar.
-
Keep the sheet in place for at least 12 hours a day, or all day if possible.
-
Remove the sheet before bathing or showering.
-
Wash the sheet daily with soap and water, avoiding soaps with moisturizers. Allow it to air dry completely. This helps the product stick better to the skin.
-
Reuse the same sheet for a week or longer, depending on the brand.
-
Your child can swim or exercise while wearing the sheet, but it may loosen.
Tips
-
Clean the sheet daily to maintain its stickiness.
-
Do not throw the scar sheet away after one use. Continue to use it for 1 week or longer. Follow the directions on the product.
-
Avoid leaving the sheet on for more than 24 hours at a time.
-
Cut the sheet to size with rounded corners before removing the liner on the back for easier application and longer use.
